DAVID EISENSTADT LAUNCHES THIRD MUSIC HISTORY BOOK
MUSICIANS UNDER THE RADAR – 42 NOTABLE CANADIAN JEWISH PERFORMERS
Just Released - David Eisenstadt’s 3rd Book – Available on Amazon
TORONTO, CANADA – July 24, 2024 - What do jazz trumpeter Freddie Stone, Anvil’s heavy metal guitarist Steve ‘Lips” Kudlow, Bonanza’s Ben Cartwright, Lorne Greene, The Band’s Robbie Robertson, and singer/songwriter Mendelson Joe have in common?
They’re all talented Canadian Jewish musicians who appear in David Eisenstadt’s latest book, MUSICIANS UNDER THE RADAR – 46 Notable Canadian Jewish Performers (www.undertheradarbook.com).
In this 3rd volume, Eisenstadt continues to profile musical artists from a historical, rather than critical, perspective. “I selected performers who are not that visible in today’s music world,” he said. Eisenstadt identified musicians who are Canadian (not necessarily Canadian born), Jewish, all genres, all genders, alive or dead.
“42 became a natural step from my second volume which featured 36 (published in 2023) and my first book (published in 2021) which highlighted 30 - the end point for journalism stories. The entire initiative began in the early days of the pandemic, took on a new life and became my hobby.”
Eisenstadt is already at work on a fourth volume. “My selections often come from reader or other artist nominations,” he said. “My sources are never-ending.”

TORONTO, CANADA – May 8, 2023 - What do Maureen Forrester, Rick Moranis, Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies), Paul Shaffer, Nick St. Nicholas (Steppenwolf), and William Shatner have in common?
All are highlighted in David Eisenstadt’s just released book, MUSICANS UNDER THE RADAR – 36 NOTABLE CANADIAN JEWISH PERFORMERS (ADHEMAR PRESS), now available in paperback and Kindle E-readers on Amazon.ca, Amazon.com and Amazon sites the world over.
This new book highlights Canadian Jewish musicians "who in my opinion and for various reasons, have somewhat disappeared from the public eye. On first blush, a few have achieved above the radar fame in other areas of the arts, yet what will surprise readers is that these performers also have credible musical chops and credentials,” he said. Witness the careers of Moranis, Shaffer and Shatner, as examples.
Written from a history, not critical music perspective, Eisenstadt’s musician selection criteria includes performers who are Canadian (although not necessarily Canadian born), Jewish, all genres and genders, individuals as performers or in groups, alive or having passed on.
Some of the other notable artists covered include:

Why 36? “Jewish tradition holds that the number 36 has had special significance since the beginning of time. Mathematically 36 is double 18, which means ‘life’ ... and what started for me as a hobby during COVID-19 continues as a journey of learning and my experience writing historical articles and books has more than doubly enriched my life“, Eisenstadt explained.
"I expect the book to find its way and be available in bookstores, initially in the Greater Toronto area including Indigo, TYPE Books and Book City locations, he added.
His first book, also available in paperback and E-kindle readers on Amazon.ca and other Amazon sites, UNDER THE RADAR – 30 NOTABLE CANADIAN JEWISH MUSICIANS (undertheradarbook.com) was published by BARONEL BOOKS and released in November 2021. AUGUST 29, 2022TORONTO, CANADA – August 29, 2022 What does .....rocker Zal Yanovsky of The Lovin’ Spoonful, jazz flutist Moe Koffman, folksingers Oscar Brand and Shelley Posen, band leader Percy Faith, children’s music trio Sharon Lois & Bram, classical pianist Robert Silverman and film score writer/composer Howard Shore, have in common?
All are notable Canadian Jewish musicians profiled in UNDER THE RADAR – 30 Notable Canadian Jewish Musicians (www.undertheradarbook.com), written by David Eisenstadt.
Each chapter looks at the various artists from a history, not critical music perspective.
“I sourced artists who had/have, in my view, become less visible in today’s dynamic music world. For many still alive, the lingering Covid pandemic hasn’t helped them much, with live performances still stalled. Some of the 30 performers in the book are working on new material in studios across Canada and the US and elsewhere and are starting to venture out,” Eisenstadt said.
The selection criteria identified musicians who are Canadian (not necessarily Canadian born), Jewish, all genres, all genders, individuals or groups, alive or dead.
“I chose 30 – an end point for journalism stories....but this compilation which started in the early days of the pandemic, took on a new life and became my hobby. For me, 30 meant the beginning. Reader reactions have generated messages, and many say – “I didn’t know that...Who knew?” Among other things, that type of response for me has made this labour of love worthwhile,” he added.
For example, Marc Jordan of Marina del Rey fame drew this response...”I knew he was Jewish, I didn’t know he’s Canadian.” Of folksinger Oscar Brand, readers said, “I didn’t realize he was the every Saturday night New York radio host for 70 years who never charged a fee – and did it all for free.” And,“Didn’t know Montreal-born Corey Hart lives in the Bahamas and cellist Ofra Harnoy resides in St. John’s, Newfoundland.”
“A second book is currently being discussed with my publisher for a possible winter 2022/2023 release which will feature another 30 musicians including these instrumentalists, singers, composers....Steven Page of the Barenaked Ladies, Rick Moranis, William Shatner, Paul Hoffert of Lighthouse, jazz pianist Lorne Lofsky, operatic contralto Maureen Forrester, children’s singer Rosalie Moscoe (of Jim & Rosalie fame), and Steppenwolf’s bass guitarist Nick St. Nicholas. My sources are never-ending,” Eisenstadt said.
Published by Baronel Books in Toronto, UNDER THE RADAR – 30 Notable Canadian Musicians, is available on all Amazon sites in paperback and E-book versions. Books are currently on the shelves of Indigo Yonge & Eglinton, all Book City and TYPE Books stores in Toronto.
